Meteorologisk institutt (Norwegian Meteorological Institute) - 1 Story
In this story the journalist writes about the Northwest Passage and Roald Amundsen. In the story it states: "I 1905-06 seilte Roald Amundsen og hans mannskap gjennom Nordvestpassasjen – sjøveien fra Atlanterhavet til Stillehavet nord for Amerika – med den lille, sjøsterke båten Gjøa." This is a mistake. The Northwest Passage is not north of America, or north of Canada or north of North America. The Northwest Passage lies in Canada's high arctic and is within the territorial boundaries of Canada. Amundsen sailed through the Northwest Passage in Canada's high-arctic. There is a portion above Alaska that is part of the USA, but that is not part of Canada. Many Norwegian stories are often confused and write about the Northwest Passage being north of Canada, but that is not the case. Geographically the Northwest Passage lies in Canada and is patrolled by the Canadian Coast Guard and the Canadian Military. The Northwest Passage passes through Canada's Nunavut Territory ( http://www.gov.nu.ca/french/) and part of Canada's Northwest Territories (http://www.gov.nt.ca/). A map can outlines this at: http://www.athropolis.com/map9.htm. The red part is all Canada and the route is directly through it. How can the Northwest Passage be north of Canada or north of North America when it is part of Nunavut Territory and the Northwest Territories in northern Canada? Nunavut for example, is a Canadian territory of 3.2 million sq. kilometres in size. The far north in Canada is Canadian, and what Canadians call this part of Canada as the Land of the Midnight Sun, and inhabited predominantly by Inuit-Canadians.
