In this story the Norwegian journalist writes: "In Ottawa, the Norwegian Foreign Minister will also meet Minister for Foreign Trade, David Emerson, the President of Parliament, Peter Miliken and other politicians." Peter Miliken is the Speaker of the House of Commons, not the President of the Parliament. There is no such position in Canada's parliament called the President of the Parliament as this journalist has written. From the Canadian Parliament website: "The Speaker of the House of Commons has important responsibilities of a procedural, administrative and ceremonial nature. He is elected by the whole House and must carry out his responsibilities in a non-partisan manner and with strict impartiality. As the chief presiding officer, he must maintain order in the Chamber and is responsible for procedural activities. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Internal Economy which is responsible for the administration of the 1,500 House of Commons employees and its annual budget which exceeds $200 million. Moreover, the Speaker is the representative of the House of Commons in its relations with the Crown, the Senate, and authorities outside Parliament. In this capacity, he welcomes many visiting dignitaries and delegations and represents the House at national events and during visits abroad. In addition, Mr. Milliken continues to carry out his responsibilities as Member of Parliament for the federal riding of Kingston and the Islands, in Ontario, (Canada)."
