In this brief story the Norwegian journalist lists Canada as part of the USA. In the story he writes:"USA: USA åpner en time tidligere Børsene i USA og Canada har i perioden 29. oktober til 2. november åpent 14:30-21:00 (norsk tid) på grunn av overgangen til vintertid." To be correct it should read: "USA og Canada: USA og Canada åpner en time tidligereBørsene i USA og Canada har i perioden 29. oktober til 2. november åpent 14:30-21:00 (norsk tid) på grunn av overgangen til vintertid." OR,"Nord-Amerika:USA og Canada åpner en time tidligereBørsene i USA og Canada har i perioden 29. oktober til 2. november åpent 14:30-21:00 (norsk tid) på grunn av overgangen til vintertid." Canada is not part of the USA so why would this journalist add Canada under a USA heading and then state about USA opening times? This story is an excellent example of how Canada so often gets added under a "USA" heading or added as part of the USA. People ask why Norwegians have a difficult time understanding the differences between Canada and the USA, and stories like this are a big part of the reason. Canada is an independent country north of the USA and doesn't deserve to get added under a USA heading, or made to look like part of the USA. Imagine the perception to Norwegian readers if a Canadian journalists constantly added Norway under some heading for Sweden, or as part of Sweden. This causes confusion and the wrong perception to readers. After contacting the reporter he agreed and wrote: "Thank you for the mail. I see your point and have changed the title to"Åpner en time tidligere!" I think a large part of the problem with many in the Norwegian press is the general lack of knowledge and respect for Canada as an independent nation in North America. Sadly, Canada is often treated in the exact same minor, disrespectful way by many in the Norwegian press, the same way many Norwegians complain Norway is treated in relation to Sweden. Yet, Canada has no the same record of errors, assumptions or mistakes in the Canadian media as Norway. It seems Norway has more of a problem extending to Canada the same level of professionalism in journalism Canada gives to Norway. Why?
