Høgskolen i Bodø - 1 Story
1) Referat fra møte i Internasjonalt Utvalg (17 June 2002)http://www.hibo.no/index.php?ID=19&displayitem=87&lang=nor&module=news
In this posting the writer states: "2. Tur til USAEt forslag om hvilke instiusjoner som kan besøkes ble presentert av Tine Viveka Westerberg. Augsburg College, Augustana College, Humbolt State University, University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Pacific Lutheran University og University of British Colombia i Canada. Avdelingsrepresentantene bes om å ta dette med til de respektive avdelingene, for å se på om det er andre mulige univerrsiteter som kan besøkes. Tilbakemeldinger på dette forslaget sendes Tine innen mandag 24 juni 2002." There are two mistakes in this information. First, Canada is not in the USA, and the Canadian province of British Columbia is spelt "British Columbia" not "British Colombia" as written. The headline should be "Tur til USA og Canada" or "Tur til Nord-Amerika" as Canada is not a sub-category of the USA. That would be like a Canadian writer stating "Tur til Sweden" with Norwegian locations listed under Sweden. Does Canada not deserve to be equally recognised as the USA? This Norwegian habit of classifying Canada under the USA or part of the USA only helps to perpetuate the lack of knowledge, clarity and understanding that Canada is an independent nation in North America, and not some part of the USA to Norwegian readers. So many in the Norwegian press portray Canada as some little offshoot of the USA, instead of giving Canada the same fair respect it deserves and extends to Norway.
